On March 30, 2012 your Page will automatically get the new design

There’s some good news and bad news (but mostly good) for Page admins and marketers.

First, the good news:

• Custom tabs can be up to 810px wide (794px of content + 8px side margins);

• You can create your own large thumbnail (“Custom Tab Image” or “View”) for all apps, even those you didn’t create!

• Make a Status Update “sticky”: You can “pin” status updates to keep them at the top of your updates for up to 7 days;

• A big juicy Cover Photo (851 x 315px) (although no advertising or promoting allowed!) PLUS your Profile Picture;

• And lots of other cool features.

The bad news (to some):

• No more ability to set a default landing tab (all users — fans and non-fans — land on Timeline/Wall);

• No Photo strip, the row of 5 thumbnails at the top of your Page;

• Smaller profile picture: Previously 180 x 540px, it’s now displayed at 124w x 125h px (although the uploaded image must be at least 180 x 180px!) and nested in the Cover Photo. But, obviously, with the addition of the Cover Photo it’s a net gain;

• No left-column navigation: Tabs are now located at the top of the Page — a throwback to the old Page layout! And fewer tabs are displayed, down to 3 optional tabs from 5 in the old layout.

Pakistan’s financial capital Karachi faces a growing menace from some of the world’s most dangerous terrorist groups because political and ethnic rivalries destabilising the city are making it easier for them to operate.

Provincial coalition politicians have become so consumed by rivalries they are hindering the war on terrorism in Karachi, which officials say contributes 68 percent of the government’s total revenue and 25 percent of gross domestic product. “All these parties have to be on board and they have to trust each other if they want any kind of plan to be effective on the ground,” said Sharfuddin Memon, a consultant for the Sindh’s Home Affairs Department.

Pakistan’s richest city, Karachi now threatened by heavy financial losses after a wave of political and sectarian violence.

“These 100 to 200 complaints are those which businessmen are formally making to the authorities. But there are hundreds of people who are scared to approach to any authority and silently pay the money demanded,” Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) Chief Ahmed Chinoy argued.

Many employees of a once-thriving garment factory are still jobless since ‘Mr Butt’, the Pak born British owner of the factory, shut down his business in Karachi and shifted his stitching unit to Bangladesh after he felt unable to continue paying protection money or Bhatta to various criminal groups with political affiliations. read more…

Extortion is a criminal offence which occurs when a person unlawfully obtains either money, property or services from a person(s), entity, or institution, through threats or some other form of pressure or force.

A few days ago, I approached a businessman from the Burns Road area whose business place was targeted by the gangsters. I went to him and was surprised that he wanted to resolve the issue but didn’t even want to report the incident to the authorities. Extortion can’t be eliminated unless those who are being harassed resist and seek the help of the state,” Saeed Shafiq maintained.

Polictical support to criminals in Karachi

When asked what the authorities were doing to curb the menace of extortion, given that there is  a special law in the province to curb the practice of Bhatta and involuntary donations, the police official said unless political backing is withdrawn from the Bhatta mafia, the police and other authorities cannot do much to control the illegal practice.

A large proportion of the population is willingly or unwillingly paying different groups to continue earning their bread and butter in the mega city.

The entire business community in Karachi is paying billions of rupees to either criminals or the police, and there is no respite from them unless one chooses to wind up or move their business.

Illegal weapons in Karachi

A crucial question which must be addressed is the supply of illegal weapons in Karachi. In a statement Rangers Brigadier Waseem said that the armed groups were using sophisticated weapons like machine guns, assault rifles such as AK47 and .222;

Supreme Court of Pakistan has taken suo moto notice of target killings and incidents of lawlessness in Karachi. However, the criminals are not given jail terms and cases are not follow up as polictical support is toward criminals.

Karachi impact on economy

The law and order situation directly impacts the economic health of Karachi. More than 25% of total taxes are paid by Karachi, more than 20% of total GDP is contributed by Karachi , the seaport is in Karachi. When the economy of Karachi is hit, the entire of Pakistan is hit. The law and order situation directly impacts the economic graph of Karachi and the rest of Pakistan.
